Canvas Overview
OpenAI launched Canvas for ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers on October 28, 2025. Canvas added a persistent right-hand panel to ChatGPT where documents and code lived throughout a working session. Rather than generating content in the chat thread (where it was difficult to edit and easy to lose), Canvas maintained a dedicated workspace that both the user and ChatGPT could edit directly.
Writing Mode
In writing mode, Canvas maintained a full document that users could type in directly alongside AI-generated or AI-assisted content. Selecting text and right-clicking opened an AI action menu: rewrite selection, change tone, make shorter, make longer, add examples, or a custom instruction field. ChatGPT edited only the selected text, leaving the rest of the document unchanged — solving the most persistent frustration with chat-based AI writing: the inability to make targeted edits without regenerating everything.
Coding Mode
For code, Canvas functioned as a lightweight editor with syntax highlighting, line numbers, and AI-powered inline suggestions. ChatGPT could add error handling to a specific function, refactor a class, add type annotations, or debug a specific section — making targeted changes to the codebase rather than suggesting replacements for the entire file. Inline comments from ChatGPT explained its changes, functioning as self-documenting AI code review.
Version History
Canvas maintained a version history of all AI and human edits, allowing users to view, compare, and restore any previous state. This addressed a major pain point: if ChatGPT made an unwanted change during editing, users could step back to the previous version rather than trying to manually undo or reconstruct the prior state.
What This Means for Indian Businesses
ChatGPT Canvas is immediately valuable to Indian content professionals, copywriters, and developers who currently use ChatGPT through awkward copy-paste workflows. The ability to have ChatGPT edit a specific paragraph, rewrite a particular function, or add a section to an existing document without regenerating the entire output dramatically improves the utility for iterative content creation. Indian marketing agencies and content teams should move to Canvas-based workflows immediately.
