AI Content Fill
Figma's AI Content Fill feature launched in September 2025 replaced the chore of adding realistic placeholder content to design mockups. Rather than using Lorem ipsum text and generic placeholder images, AI Content Fill analysed the context of each design element — reading labels, component names, and surrounding UI — and generated appropriate realistic content. A form field labelled "Customer Name" received a realistic name. A product image placeholder in an e-commerce layout received a contextually appropriate product photo. A review section received realistic review text.
Make Designs in Design (MDD)
Figma's most ambitious AI feature was its natural language design editing capability, which Figma internally called Make Designs in Design. Users could select a group of elements and describe modifications in plain English: "Make this card component look more premium — darker background, gold accent, tighter spacing." Figma's AI would interpret the instruction and apply corresponding design system changes, drawing from the file's existing component library where possible.
Layout Suggestions
For frames and auto-layout containers, Figma AI surfaced layout alternatives based on the content being displayed — suggesting different grid configurations, spacing variations, and responsive breakpoint layouts. This was particularly useful for designers working on component variants, where AI could generate a full set of size variations (small, medium, large, compact) from a single designed state.
Design Critique Mode
Figma AI also offered an optional Design Critique mode, where an AI reviewer analysed a selected frame against accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA), typography best practices, colour contrast ratios, and layout consistency. Critique mode flagged issues with specific suggestions for improvement — functioning as an always-available design review partner for solo designers or small teams without dedicated design review processes.
What This Means for Indian Businesses
Figma AI's content fill and layout suggestions are directly valuable to India's large UX design community. Indian product designers and agencies working with global clients can now iterate on designs faster — generating placeholder content that looks realistic, exploring layout variations automatically, and getting AI suggestions on design consistency. For junior designers in Indian agencies, AI suggestions also serve as a learning tool that surfaces professional design patterns.
