Autonomous Agents in Copilot Studio

Microsoft launched autonomous agent capabilities in Copilot Studio on February 10, 2026. Autonomous agents differed from the previous assistant-mode agents (which required human triggering for each action) by allowing multi-step action sequences to run without human approval at each step. Agents could monitor conditions, make decisions, take actions across Microsoft 365 services, and loop back to monitoring — operating as always-on automation rather than single-shot assistants.

Agent Building in No-Code

Copilot Studio's visual agent builder allowed business users to define agent behaviour through a combination of natural language goal descriptions and visual trigger-action flows. An agent to "monitor new SharePoint documents in the Contracts folder, extract key terms using AI, check against company approval thresholds, and route to the appropriate approver" could be built in approximately 20 minutes by a business analyst with no programming background.

Microsoft 365 Graph Integration

Autonomous agents had native access to the Microsoft 365 Graph — the unified API for all Microsoft productivity data including email, calendar, Teams messages, SharePoint files, and OneDrive content. This access, governed by the same AAD (Azure Active Directory) permissions as human users, meant agents could read and write to the full Microsoft data estate while respecting existing data governance policies.

Monitoring and Governance

Microsoft built agent activity dashboards into the Microsoft Admin Center, showing what each agent had done, when, and to what data. Agents could be paused, modified, or deactivated by administrators in real time. Full audit logs were written to Microsoft Purview for compliance purposes, making the autonomous agent deployment model suitable for regulated industries including banking and healthcare.

What This Means for Indian Businesses

Microsoft Copilot Studio's autonomous agents are the most enterprise-accessible AI agent platform for Indian corporates already on Microsoft 365. The no-code visual agent builder means business analysts and operations managers — not just developers — can build and deploy agents. For Indian enterprises in manufacturing, BFSI, and IT services that run extensively on Microsoft infrastructure, Copilot Studio agents represent the lowest-friction path to deploying AI automation at scale.
