Le Chat's Transformation

February 2025 saw a major upgrade to Le Chat, Mistral's consumer-facing AI assistant. The update added image generation via FLUX.1 (by Black Forest Labs, founded by former Stability AI researchers), voice input with automatic transcription, and a Canvas interface for document co-editing similar to Claude's Artifacts. Mistral positioned these directly against ChatGPT, emphasising European GDPR compliance.

Image Generation via FLUX

FLUX.1 is widely regarded as producing higher-quality images than Stable Diffusion XL, particularly for photorealistic content and accurate text rendering. Image generation was free with daily limits and available in higher volumes on Pro ($14.99/month). Quality benchmarks showed FLUX outputs competitive with Midjourney v5 and DALL-E 3, with particularly strong performance on architectural renders and photorealistic portraits.

Voice and Canvas

Voice input used Mistral's in-house transcription model, supporting 12 languages at launch with strong performance on European languages. Canvas provided a split-screen interface where chat appeared on the left and generated documents appeared in an editable right panel — enabling iterative document editing without regenerating entire outputs.

Mistral's Model Lineup

Mistral's underlying models included Mistral Large 2 (competitive with GPT-4o for European language tasks), Mistral Small (positioned against Claude Haiku), and Codestral (a 22B model specialised for code generation supporting 80+ programming languages with 32K context). All were available via API at competitive pricing against US providers.

What This Means for Indian Businesses

Le Chat's free tier with image generation makes it one of the most capable free AI tools available to Indian users. While Midjourney and Adobe Firefly require paid subscriptions, Le Chat's FLUX-based image generation at no cost is useful for social media content, product mockups, and presentation visuals. For Indian businesses exploring European AI alternatives for data sovereignty reasons, Mistral's growing capability set makes it worth serious evaluation.
