Apple Intelligence Finally Rolls Out in India

The Wait Is Over

Apple Intelligence launched in the US with iOS 18.1 in October 2024, but Indian users waited through iOS 18.2, 18.3, and finally 18.4 before gaining access. The delay was attributed to regulatory compliance, with India's data protection framework cited as a factor. The March 2025 rollout came alongside several other markets including Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Brazil.

Core Features

Writing Tools — a system-wide AI writing assistant accessible from any text field — lets users select text anywhere and choose from rewrite, proofread, make shorter, make longer, change tone, and summarise. The AI processes requests on-device for privacy-sensitive operations, sending to Apple's Private Cloud Compute only when more computing power is needed.

Image Playground creates stylised images in cartoon, illustration, or sketch style. Clean Up in Photos uses AI inpainting to remove unwanted objects with single-tap accuracy rivalling dedicated editing apps. Priority Notifications intelligently ranks notifications so important messages surface first.

Siri's ChatGPT Integration

When Siri encounters queries beyond its capabilities, it can hand off to ChatGPT with user permission. No ChatGPT account required for basic use; Plus subscribers can link accounts for higher limits and newer models. The handoff is transparent, with Siri notifying users before sending queries to OpenAI's servers.

Privacy Architecture

Apple's on-device processing is a genuine differentiator. Sensitive operations run entirely on-device. Operations needing more compute use Apple's Private Cloud Compute, where Apple cryptographically guarantees they cannot log or access requests. This architecture has no equivalent among Google or Microsoft's AI offerings — important in India where data privacy concerns are growing.
