The Free Tier Expansion
In March 2025, Google formalised and expanded its free tier across the Gemini API via Google AI Studio. Free tier: Gemini 1.5 Flash (1,500 RPD, 15 RPM), Gemini 1.5 Pro (50 RPD, 2 RPM), Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental (1,000 RPD). Crucially, no time limit — this is a permanent offering designed to build developer ecosystem adoption.
What's Available Free
Gemini 1.5 Flash with 1 million token context, image input, audio input, video input, code execution, and function calling — all at zero cost. This combination covers the vast majority of AI application use cases needed to prototype a product. Gemini 1.5 Pro with 2 million token context is free at lower rate limits, sufficient for development and testing.
Google AI Studio
AI Studio functions as a browser-based IDE for AI development: prompt gallery, structured prompt editor, built-in token counting, and one-click code export to Python, JavaScript, Go, and others. No account setup or credit card required to start experimenting — frictionless onboarding that competitors struggled to match.
Paid Tiers
For production: Gemini 1.5 Pro on paid tier is $3.50 per million input tokens for prompts under 128K tokens, $10.50 for longer. Competitive with GPT-4o and combined with the permanent free development tier, Google positioned itself as the most developer-accessible major AI provider.
What This Means for Indian Businesses
Google's free Gemini API tier is transformative for India's developer ecosystem. With 1,500 free daily requests on Gemini 1.5 Flash and 50 on 1.5 Pro, Indian indie developers and early-stage startups can build and validate AI products without any API costs. This removes the most common barrier cited by Indian developers — the fear of unexpected bills before achieving revenue.
