Deep Research in the Enterprise
Google had launched Gemini Deep Research as a consumer feature in Gemini Advanced in November 2024 — an agent that spent 10-30 minutes autonomously browsing the web, consulting multiple sources, and generating comprehensive research reports on complex topics. The August 2025 Workspace integration brought this capability into the enterprise environment with additional controls: output routed to Google Docs, source citations linked directly in the document, and research tasks initiatable from within any Workspace product.
How Deep Research Works in Docs
Within Google Docs, a new Gemini sidebar panel allowed users to assign Deep Research tasks with natural language queries. The task ran asynchronously — a notification arrived when complete, typically 10-60 minutes later depending on complexity. The completed research was inserted into the Doc at the cursor position as a structured report with headers, body text, and a full bibliography. All cited sources were linked, and Grounding data verified factual claims against the sources at the time of research.
Workspace Integration Depth
Deep Research in Workspace could access internal Google Drive content alongside external web sources, combining proprietary company knowledge with current web data. A market analyst could ask for a competitive analysis that drew on the company's internal market research files (accessed via Drive) and current competitor websites — a genuinely hybrid RAG-plus-web research capability.
Enterprise Controls
Workspace admins could configure which external domains Deep Research could access, ensuring sensitive research tasks didn't inadvertently query competitor-controlled servers. DLP (Data Loss Prevention) policies applied to outbound queries, and all research activities were logged in Google Vault for compliance purposes.
What This Means for Indian Businesses
Gemini Deep Research in Google Workspace is immediately useful for Indian professional services firms — consulting, legal, financial advisory, and market research. The ability to assign a comprehensive research task (competitor analysis, regulatory landscape review, market sizing) to an AI agent that runs autonomously for 30-60 minutes and delivers a structured, cited report directly to Google Docs replaces what would otherwise cost Rs 20,000-50,000 in analyst time. Google Workspace Business Starter starts at approximately Rs 125 per user per month in India.
